April 8

As my first post, this is a quite a daunting venture. I am not so much as scared to write it, but more intimidated by the process of writing what I want to say. But this is not going to be one of those boring, “Hello, this is my blog” kind of “Hello’s!”, because that is for people who have nothing to say and probably should not have started a blog in the first place.  This very first post is about a discovery I have made and one that I just don’t seem to understand. The culprit to my confusion? The one and only, Ellie Goulding! She is one of those increasingly common artists who has been given the ever more decreasingly unique compliment of “The next big thing!” But what does that even mean anyway?

We are in the midst of a flurry of brand new talent popping to the surface and the idea of amazing “female domination” in the charts. (Seem a bit sexist to anyone?) Us English are already enjoying the incredible voice and music of Florence and the machine, the electro-pop kind of style of La roux, (not really to my liking) Pixie Lott, Little Boots and the list goes on. Aside from Florence and the machine, I find the others pretty bland and boring, but I can see where they fit into the boxes of music styles today.

However, Ellie Goulding appears and I’m totally flummoxed! Her voice sounds like a Helium-intoxicated chipmunk, yet after  hearing a few songs you can almost get used to it and perhaps even start to like it. Although I find that her songs vary from boring, to cheesy, and in one case to a bit “High School Musical” (just my opinion), I don’t seem to feel those feelings of annoyance that I get over MANY others artists, for example, Britney Spears. Maybe it is because she has self-respect (so far). We don’t see her parading around in just her underwear to sell her music. That to me shows belief in herself as an artist, so even if I don’t like it, I respect her as a person. When I listen to her music, she sounds unlike all the others of today. In my case, that doesn’t mean a good response, but yet you do not see her in my “Hate” category….. so all I can say again is that Ellie Goulding confuses me. Her music confuses me. But as far as I can see as an artist, I feel that I should, in the spirit of her cheesy music, end with “Watch this space!”
